Nc State Basketball Welcomes New Interim Coach

NC State's newly appointed Interim Head Coach Todd Goebbel stepped up to the microphone this evening for his inaugural media appearance, following Dave Doeren's dismissal over the weekend.

Goebbel kicked off his press conference by expressing gratitude toward Doeren for his 14 years of leadership before diving into questions spanning the coaching transition, the parting ways with Defensive Coordinator DJ Eliot, anticipated changes to the roster, his aspirations for the permanent head coaching role, and strategic preparations for Saturday's matchup against Cal.

In a touching tribute, he revealed that NC State will pay homage to legendary former Head Coach Chuck Amato by displaying red shoe decals on the reverse side of players' helmets during this weekend's contest.

Press Conference Recap

Reporter: “The last 72 hours, what has that been like and how much was Dave able to say goodbye to the team and all those different things, and what have you seen from the players in their response?”

Goebbel: “Coach Doeren was definitely able to say goodbye to the team. I’m glad he did. That’s a man that’s poured his blood, sweat, and tears into the bricks of here at NC State. These players genuinely love him. They respect him.”

Reporter: “Who have you leaned on the most in this new role of being a head coach for the first time?”

Goebbel: “I’ve reached out to a few that’s kind of been in the interim role. I won’t get into specifics of who they are, but I really do appreciate them.”

Reporter: “I’m sure this is probably not how you’ve expected to start your head coaching career. What was maybe your reaction when you found out that you were going to be selected for the interim role?”
Goebbel: “Humbled. Honored. It’s definitely a situation that you respect, but gentleman I worked with for eight years, I’ve got to honor him, too, by doing it the right way, just like he always did, and I’ll continue to do that.”
